NYPD detective busted for domestic assault after previous guilty plea in wife fight

An off-duty NYPD detective was arrested on Staten Island and charged with misdemeanor assault — his second bust in just over a year, according to police.
Douglas MacEwen, 42, was arrested shortly after 1 a.m. Sunday, cops said. Although details on the alleged assault were not immediately available, police said the incident was domestic in nature.
In September 2023, MacEwen was arrested and charged with assault after his wife claimed he “pushed her to the ground and hit her ear” during a 4:30 a.m. argument at their Staten Island home, the Daily News previously reported.
In that case, MacEwen pleaded guilty to “being involved in a physical altercation” and “endangering the welfare of a child,” and was ordered to undergo counseling and put on probation for one year, according to department records. He was also suspended for 10 days without pay and docked 10 vacation days, according to NYPD disciplinary records.
MacEwen joined the NYPD in 2005 and was promoted to detective in 2021, according to department personnel records. He is currently assigned as a detective in Brooklyn.
The NYPD did not immediately respond to a request for comment on why MacEwen was allowed to retain his job and rank following his 2023 guilty plea, and what discipline he might face in the latest arrest.
In 2019, MacEwen was reportedly arrested for drunk driving in Staten Island.
